My Earliest Memory

My earliest memory goes back to the time when I was two. I remember that day well, the day my brother was born. 1978. I was told that we will have a new baby for me to play with. And I was conned into believing that babies are simply picked up from the hospital. So on November 30th when the time was right, I was told that we are going to the hospital to pick up a baby. It must have been a cold November evening in the small town of Sagar. My grandfather was posted there at that time. I remember it was raining. And I remember running around all the cribs in the hospital, taking a peep at all the new borns, to choose the cutest of them all. I don't remember if I was able to decide on one, or what happened later...All I remember is running around cribs in a large hall.

My brother ofcourse is one up on me, he remembers the time he was born! He remembers how everybody was smiling down at him adoringly and saying, oh what a cute baby. ;)

Being the lead man here, I can't keep out indefinitely.

I would have to agree on the 1st count that Piyu did go to pick the cutest one. That she picked the naughtiest one is something she might not admit to.

I, on the other hand, did not have a choice of sisters, and had to make do with the one who picked me :P

I, of course, remember more from my childhood, since I had a more eventful life since I was born. Simbly because Piyu was already there when I came :) while Piyu had 2 years of blissful existance before the storm hit the coast!

We shared many things... a bed, toys, a room, and our folks, of course. All this used to be Piyu's, and she gave half of it all to me when I came along! So she would have me believe! There were other things too she'd tell me from time to time... but since her accounts varied from time to time, I figured out soon enough that she was making some, or most, of it up!

When we grew up a little, we also shared a bicycle, which she rode most of the time, since she had a lot of friends her age around, who used to help her retain possession of the bike while I tried to chase her on foot. I have had my share of bicycles and bicycle riding since. Later when she got a new bike, I rode it till it clattered woefully!

Another distinct memory from childhood is of the curtains we had in our room. These were half curtains, besides the full length curtains. These covered just the bottom half of the window, and were mostly drawn. There were many colours in the curtains, oranges, reds, yellows, greens, doing maze like curvy patterns.... and the light from the street lamps would filter through these at night. In those days, some 25 years back, street lamps were normal dim bulbs, much before the times when tubelights came, and much much before sodium lights made the skies hazy with the orange glow that doesn't allow you to see most of the stars nowadays. I would watch the multicolours through the curtains while I lay there in bed with the lights switched off and instructions to sleep...

Funnily my earliest memory is also of my brother at home... looking at me lying in his crib.

He must have looked hungry to me, cos I fed him some upma that Mom had made!! He must have started crying or something - I dont remember, but obviously, Mom found this out soon enough and removed all the upma from his mouth!

Anyways, till date he does not like upma too much and does not eat it, and he blames me for that!! So much for the love and caring I gave him! :p

But still I dont think I would trade having a little brother for anything else in the universe!

Now those are wonderful stories. Makes me wish even more that I had a kid brother or even better - a kid sister that I could boss around ... and protect sometimes :)
Avi - I kinda feel bad for you - I shared the same "hand-me-down" fate ... and more - since I was the youngest in all the families .. but then see how smart you grew up ;)
Soumya - Whats it with you and food :)
